  • Ruth Nyambura Mbagara, mother of Ian Njoroge, apologized for her son’s actions, describing him as a responsible church-going young man
  • She explained that the confrontation began after Njoroge made an illegal U-turn and couldn’t pay the Ksh.10,000 bribe demanded by the officer
  • While acknowledging her son’s wrongdoing, Ms. Mbagara refuted claims that he intended to harm the officer

Ruth Nyambura Mbagara, the mother of Ian Njoroge, a 19-year-old university student seen in a viral video assaulting a traffic police officer has publicly vouched for her son’s character.

Ruth, who spoke to the press, described his son as a church-going young man, who met the tragic incident while rushing to take his siblings to church.

Ms. Mbagara emphasized that her son has always been responsible and obedient, stressing his good upbringing and commitment to his family duties.

Ms. Mbagara explained that the altercation began when Njoroge was rushing home to return her car and take his siblings to church.

She admitted that her son made an illegal U-turn, which led to the encounter with the police officer. According to Ms. Mbagara, the officer demanded a Ksh.10,000 bribe, which Njoroge could not afford.

“He told me he wanted to bring the car back home before going to church and on his way, he met the policeman. It’s true he made a U-turn. The policeman said he wanted Ksh.10,000, and Ian told him he couldn’t raise that because he’s a student and it was his mother’s car. He said he could raise Ksh.5,000, but the policeman refused,”

Mrs Mbagara recounted.

The situation escalated when Njoroge attempted to negotiate with the officer, offering to raise Ksh.5,000 through his friends. The officer’s refusal led to the physical confrontation that was captured on camera and widely circulated on social media.

Ms. Mbagara, visibly distressed, recounted her shock upon returning home that evening to find police cars outside her gate and officers manhandling her son inside the house.

She expressed her dismay at the portrayal of her son in the media, emphasizing his upbringing and character.

“I was surprised because I have brought my son up in a Christian way. He is a boy who has gone to good schools, has grown with manners, is God-fearing, obedient, and very polite at home. I have never seen him agitated. Something must have happened to that boy,” she said.

While Ms. Mbagara acknowledged her son’s wrongdoing in assaulting the officer, she refuted claims that he intended to kill the officer.

“I’m speaking as a mother who has been hurting because of seeing how the boy has trended in a negative way. I want to apologize, first of all, and say what he did was not right; he was not supposed to beat that man. I already told him that was wrong,” she stated.
