GSU Officer Who Was Arrested with Bags of Bhang Freed

  • A GSU officer was arrested on June 5 at the Sabaki Bridge vehicle checkpoint in Malindi for possessing cannabis sativa
  • Abderehman Kassim Hussein, found with five packages of suspected bhang, pleaded not guilty in court and was released on a KSh500,000 bond
  • The case will be mentioned again on June 20, 2024

A GSU officer who was arrested on Wednesday, June 5, in a Toyota Probox at the Sabaki Bridge vehicle checkpoint in Malindi, Kilifi County, has been released on bond.

Abderehman Kassim Hussein was detained by a multi-agency security team after being found in possession of cannabis sativa (bhang).

On the fateful day, the security team stopped the Toyota Probox (registration number KDD 253T), which was ferrying passengers to Lamu, and ordered everyone to disembark with their luggage for a routine security check.

During the inspection, officers discovered five cello-taped packages of a dry plant suspected to be cannabis sativa in Hussein’s luggage.

Hussein was subsequently arraigned before the Malindi Law Courts on Thursday, June 6, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing a narcotic substance.

The court granted him a bond of KSh500,000, with no option for cash bail.

Further investigation revealed that Hussein is a police officer attached to the GSU and based at Minjila in Tana Delta. His certificate of appointment was also found among his belongings during the search.

The case is scheduled for mention on June 20, 2024.
