  • Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru led the distribution of 600 gas cylinders (Meko) in Ngariama Ward to combat climate change effects caused by tree felling and wood fuel emissions
  • The initiative aims to provide clean energy alternatives to households, particularly benefiting women who face challenges associated with collecting firewood, including time wastage and exposure to harmful soot
  • In addition to the gas cylinder distribution, Kirinyaga County Government implemented various measures that will enhance its agricultural productivity

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has spearheaded the distribution of 600 filled-up gas cylinders (Meko) to households in Ngariama Ward, in a bid to address the adverse effects of climate change.

The initiative aims to mitigate the impact of tree felling for firewood and reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by the use of wood fuel, particularly in areas neighboring the Mt Kenya Forest.

Governor Waiguru emphasized her administration’s commitment to combating climate change during her address at Ngariama Primary School, where she presided over the distribution event on Friday.

She expressed concern about the rampant tree felling in Mt Kenya Forest, highlighting the need for urgent action to sensitize and support communities in adopting clean energy alternatives.

“We are taking drastic measures to sensitize and support our people on clean energy fuel as opposed to firewood, and today we are providing 600 homesteads with filled gas cylinders, with plans to distribute 3,000 more in the same ward,” stated Governor Waiguru.

The distribution of gas cylinders not only serves as a climate change adaptation measure but also seeks to improve the lives of women who bear the brunt of using firewood in their households.

Governor Waiguru emphasized the importance of dignifying the lives of women by alleviating the challenges associated with collecting firewood, including time wastage and exposure to harmful soot.

Highlighting the benefits of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), Governor Waiguru noted its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental advantages over traditional wood fuel.

LPG usage reduces exposure to pollutants like carbon monoxide, thereby promoting cleaner and healthier cooking environments for families.

Other Interventions

In addition to the gas cylinder distribution, the Kirinyaga County Government has implemented various legislative, institutional, and strategic interventions to address climate change.

These include the establishment of a special fund for climate action, enactment of laws for solid waste management, and the creation of a climate change directorate.

Under the “Wezesha Kirinyaga Programme,” initiatives such as promoting agroforestry, distributing high-value fruit trees to farmers, and undertaking community water projects have been launched to enhance climate resilience and agricultural productivity.

Governor Waiguru distributed water pipes and fittings for local irrigation projects, aimed at increasing crop production and ensuring water access for both domestic and agricultural purposes.

“This initiative is part of our elaborate plan to increase access to water for domestic and irrigation purposes, achieved through borehole sinking, water pipe distribution, and construction of water tanks for community water projects,” added Governor Waiguru, who also serves as the Chair of the Council of Governors (COG).
