  • Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu faced intense backlash after commenting on losing 10,000 Instagram followers during the Reject Finance Bill protests
  • Despite defending her comments as a joke taken out of context, Nyamu’s response only fueled public anger, with many calling out her perceived lack of empathy and leadership
  • Adding to the controversy, Nairobi photographer Shem Obara publicly unfollowed her, following pressure from his followers to distance himself from the senator

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu finds herself under fire once again, this time for her comments on losing 10,000 Instagram followers during the Reject Finance Bill demonstrations.

As families mourned loved ones lost in the protests, Nyamu’s remarks struck many as insensitive and out of touch.

Netizens across various social media platforms criticized the mother of three for prioritizing her social media presence over the real struggles faced by citizens.

“People lost their lives, and you’re talking about how you lost 10k followers. SHAME ON YOU, KAREN.”

Nyamu defended her comments, claiming they were made in jest and taken out of context.

She explained that her 18-minute speech had been reduced to a mere few seconds about Instagram followers, which were then blown out of proportion.

“Hehehe, but I lost 10k followers. In a whole 18-minute submission, you only got the 5 seconds on followers? Lol, such a joker,” she retorted, only fueling the public’s anger further.

The backlash intensified as people questioned her empathy and leadership skills, reminding her that followers could be regained, unlike the lives lost.

In response to continued criticism, Nyamu stated, “You missed hehehe. So, are we never supposed to laugh again? That guilt trip doesn’t work on me.”

Adding to the controversy, Nairobi photographer and creative director Shem Obara publicly unfollowed Nyamu on Instagram, revealing that followers had urged him to distance himself from her.
