  • Two KCSE students were caught with mobile phones in an exam room on day four of the national exams, raising concerns over cheating attempts
  • Officers from Ruiru received reports of potential exam malpractice and quickly seized the devices, now under investigation
  • KNEC has since issued strict rules against mobile phones to protect exam integrity, warning all candidates against such breaches

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a strong warning to KCSE students after two candidates were apprehended with mobile phones in an examination room at a Ruiru school on November 6.

The incident marks a breach of exam regulations that KNEC has repeatedly emphasized to maintain the integrity of the KCSE examinations.

According to Ruiru DCIO Jeremiah Ndumbai, officers received a tip-off during routine surveillance and immediately investigated the school in Kiambu County. Upon arrival, they found two students attempting to use mobile devices inside the exam hall.

“KNEC has clear regulations that all phones must be locked securely at the examination center to prevent any possibility of cheating,” stated Ndumbai.

He further cautioned students against risking their future by engaging in exam malpractice, adding that strict disciplinary action will follow such incidents.

Ruiru Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too emphasized that KNEC and local authorities are taking the breach seriously, promising swift measures to discourage any further misconduct.

This incident underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to secure this year’s national exams and follows Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba’s recent statement that enhanced security measures are in place to curb malpractice.
