  • In a heartfelt vigil, colleagues remembered Njambi Koikai’s incredible journey, urging Kenyans to help her family offset a KSh 3M hospital bill as they mourn her loss

Emotions ran high, and the show had to take many breaks as journalists, including CNN’s Larry Madowo, gathered at NTV to hold a vigil in memory of their former colleague Njambi Koikai, who passed away on Wednesday.

The beloved entertainer succumbed to thoracic endometriosis, a condition she had battled for many years, on June 5. At the time of her passing, Njambi, popularly known as Fahyah Mama, was 38 years old.

Larry Madowo, who previously worked with Njambi at NTV, was accompanied by her former colleagues, including SPM Buzz’s Eddie Butita, and a talented line of panelists such as Ciru Muriuki, Jeff Mote, and Anita Nderu, alongside actress Cindy Ogana.

Cindy Ogana broke down in tears as she recalled the moments she shared with Njambi, praising her talent and lamenting that death had been unjust to her.

Eddie Butita, who met Njambi for the first time while acting in the theater at Heartstrings Entertainment, referred to her as a “jack of all trades,” noting her ability to excel in various media roles and even speak French despite her background.

Larry Madowo also highlighted Njambi’s linguistic skills and academic achievements, mourning her as one of the most talented panelists he had ever worked with at Nation Media Group.

He urged Kenyans to contribute to a paybill he displayed on screen, noting the family’s struggle to cover a KSh 3 million hospital bill accumulated during Njambi’s illness.

Njambi Koikai died at Nairobi Hospital after enduring years of pain from thoracic endometriosis, a condition associated with menstruation where tissue similar to the womb lining develops in other body areas, causing severe pain, fatigue, and heavy periods.

She had been an advocate for educating girls about the disease, revealing that she experienced symptoms from age 13 but only received a proper diagnosis 17 years later.

Her message to women and girls was that painful menstruation is not normal and should prompt medical attention.

The special edition of “The Trend,” usually hosted by Amina Abdi Rabar, was led by Larry Madowo, who now works at CNN.

Njambi was a former panelist on the show, and Madowo last hosted it on June 23, 2017, before joining the BBC.
