  • The suspect, Ian Njoroge, was apprehended at his home in Kayole, Nairobi, by the Nairobi area DCI

A motorist who brutally assaulted a traffic police officer during a routine traffic stop has been arrested.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, drew significant public outrage after videos of the attack circulated on social media.

The officer, Corporal (CPL), was on duty along Kamiti Road at Mirema Junction around 08:00 hours, directing traffic.

He noticed a vehicle causing an obstruction by attempting an illegal U-turn. When the officer approached, the driver hit the road kerb, rendering the vehicle immobile.

CPL then entered the car and instructed the driver to head to the Kasarani Police Station.

As they neared Quick Mart on Kamiti Road, the driver, identified as Ian Njoroge, suddenly stopped the vehicle.

He then drew a sword from beneath his seat, prompting the officer to exit the car for his safety.

His injuries, though serious, are not life-threatening.

The assault, captured on video, shows Njoroge, clad in a red basketball jersey and jeans, attacking the officer with an overhand punch followed by a soccer-style kick to the face.

The video sparked a wave of condemnation on social media, leading to a swift response from law enforcement.

The Kasarani police have confirmed the arrest and indicated that further investigations are underway.
