  • Controversial Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky appeared in court, pleading guilty to four counts of abusing the currency by engaging in the act of “spraying” banknotes at social events.
  • Bobrisky’s lawyer argued for leniency, citing her status as a first-time offender, while two counts of money laundering were dismissed by the court
  • Despite her plea, Bobrisky will remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pending further legal proceeding

Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment scene took a dramatic turn as controversial transgender personality Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Dressed in black attire with a scarf concealing her face, Bobrisky faced charges of abusing the currency, specifically for engaging in the act of “spraying” banknotes at social events, a common practice at Nigerian celebrations.

The court heard that Bobrisky threw banknotes in the air as a sign of appreciation, a practice known as “spraying.”

While culturally significant, this act is technically considered an offense as it results in the currency being trampled upon.

The charges against Bobrisky included incidents where she indulged in this practice at various events over the past year, including the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s film “Ajakaju.”

Bobrisky pleaded guilty to four counts of abusing the currency, but two counts of money laundering were dismissed by the court.

Her lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, argued for leniency, emphasizing that she was a first-time offender. Despite the plea, Bobrisky will remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until further legal proceedings.

This case comes on the heels of growing scrutiny over Bobrisky’s activities.

Recently, she faced backlash after winning the award for best-dressed female at a women’s competition, sparking debates about gender identity and recognition within the industry.

The controversy reached a crescendo at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s film, where Bobrisky’s unexpected win stirred shockwaves and discussions both online and offline.

Bobrisky’s arrest and subsequent court appearance have ignited further debate, with netizens questioning which cell she should be assigned to, given her self-identification as a woman despite being biologically male.
